  1. A KNIGHT IN ARMOUR.- The Chêne Chapelle ("Chapel Oak") is between 800 and 1,200 years old. It is 15m high and its base has a girth of 16m. Its hollow trunk hosts two chapels, which were built there in 1669: Notre Dame de la Paix ("Our Lady of Peace") and the Chambre de l'Ermite ("Hermit's room"). A spiral staircase around the trunk provides access to the chapels.

  3. Pete Nelson's "Treehouses of the World" published in 2004, dedicates four pages to the Chêne-Chapelle. The author reveals: "The oak was far more than I had ever expected. The care that the people of Allouville have taken to keep this ancient oak alive and upright is extraordinary. The structure itself is equally spellbinding."
