  1. THE LONG GREY HAIR.- Dalada Maluwa is an elevated area where many Buddhist buildings are situated: shrines for the tooth-relic ("Dalada")or shrines connected with its worship, like the crematory stupa we can see at the back of the picture.
According to Sri Lankan legends, when the Lord Buddha passed away, his body was cremated in a sandalwood pyre in India and his left canine tooth was retrieved from the funeral pyre. It came to Sri Lanka 800 years after the Buddha's death, in the 4th century. Each time the seat of the kingdom was moved (from Anuradhapura to Polonnaruwa, then to Dambadeniya and other cities), a new palace was built to enshrine the relic. Finally, it was brought to Kandy where it is at present, in the Temple of the Tooth.
